A food score is a method of grading foods that takes into account the specific amounts of certain vitamins and minerals. Deficiencies with meals is best accomplished with traditional grading (A, B, C, D); the highest grade of A indicates a more complete balance of nutrients related to the DRI standards set to prevent nutritional deficiencies. This system was developed by research institutions and endorsed by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (AND), as well as other leading organizations in the field. Food scoring is centered on awareness of deficiencies with foods or food groups (i.e.: meals, recipes or meal plans) and then enforces education for the user and client with regard to healthier alternatives that would correct these deficiencies.
